Hamas’ Attack on Israel Raises Global Concerns: Urgent Decisions Required amidst Escalating Tensions

In recent weeks, the world has become a more dangerous place due to the escalating conflict between Hamas and Israel. The wanton attack by Hamas, which included the slaughter and kidnapping of children, has triggered significant geopolitical repercussions. Now, there is a real possibility of a wider Middle Eastern war, with Hezbollah and Iran hinting at potential intervention. Moreover, there are concerns about China’s threats towards Taiwan and its disruptive actions in the East China Sea. Furthermore, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has not only upended the international rule of law but also endangered European stability. In light of these developments, urgent decisions are needed to prevent further chaos and deter the outbreak of a wider war.

However, the ability to make tough decisions regarding national defense has been hampered by the absence of Senate-confirmed military leaders. This crucial issue has been compounded by a Senate hold that has prevented the Defense Department from placing almost 300 experienced and battle-tested leaders in critical posts around the world. Currently, the Navy and Air Force are without confirmed uniformed leaders, and key commands such as the Navy’s 5th Fleet and the 7th Fleet remain in Senate limbo. Complicating matters further, important commands like Cyber Command and U.S. Northern Command are awaiting confirmation of their commanders. This situation has made it difficult for acting commanders, who are unable to make long-term decisions as required by law. Consequently, the military’s readiness has been compromised, rendering us militarily weaker than we have been in years.

The primary reason behind this setback is a hold placed by Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., on general officer promotions. This hold, which is in its eighth month, has had significant repercussions, as senatorial approval is necessary for every military promotion recommended by the president. Consequently, while commissions and promotions from second lieutenant/ensign through colonel/captain continue to proceed through unanimous consent, flag officer promotions and reassignments have been unilaterally halted by Tuberville. His opposition stems from a policy of the Biden administration wherein travel costs for service members seeking reproductive care (including abortions) are covered by the military if they reside in a state that does not permit access to such care. Though Tuberville may disagree with this policy, his actions are both misguided and cruel as they penalize nonpolitical officers for a political decision. It is essential to remember that the American military has earned global respect not only for its competence but also for its apolitical culture.

Tuberville contends that the Senate could individually confirm officers, but such an approach would be time-consuming and hinder the passage of critical bills such as the National Defense Authorization Act and aid to Israel. Consequently, Tuberville’s hold has not only weakened our preparedness for war but also undermined our ability to assist our allies and address the pressing worldwide problems triggered by Hamas’ attack. This situation has been echoed by Adm. Lisa Franchetti, the unconfirmed, acting Chief of Naval Operations, who testified that the hold is eroding readiness.

Moreover, Tuberville’s hold has inflicted unnecessary hardship on military officers and their families. These officers frequently change jobs and locations, with the Pentagon aiming to facilitate these transitions during the summer to accommodate school district changes for families. However, due to Tuberville’s hold, families have been denied this opportunity. In an open letter, 1,000 active-duty military spouses emphasized that regardless of political beliefs, it is imperative to ensure that service members and military families are not exploited for political gain. Tuberville’s cruel decision has placed an unfair burden on these families.

It is crucial to comprehend the gravity of the situation. War is an immensely complex, dangerous, chaotic, and unpredictable activity undertaken by humans. Consequently, the attack by Hamas and Israel’s subsequent declaration of war have fundamentally altered the geopolitical landscape, with far-reaching consequences that are only beginning to unfold.

In this critical juncture, it is imperative to cease harming America’s military leaders and to alleviate the burdens imposed upon service members. We must work towards strengthening our country and supporting our allies. By the end of the year, 650 generals and flag officers, comprising 90% of the total, will need Senate approval. Currently, around 110 officers are performing two jobs or occupying temporary positions. Addressing this situation may take years, but we must act urgently. Tuberville must lift his imprudent and cruel hold and start supporting those who lead America’s brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen in the crucible of combat on land, sea, and air.
