The Delhi High Court has ruled that the Haj pilgrimage and associated rituals are a form of religious practice protected by the Constitution of India. The decision came in response to a series of petitions filed by various Haj Group Organisers (HGOs) that challenged the Centre’s suspension of their registration and quota for the pilgrimage. The court concluded that the government’s decision to suspend the HGOs’ registration and quota was unconstitutional and ordered that their registrations and quotas be reinstated. The court emphasized the importance of finding alternative solutions that would enable citizens to exercise their fundamental right to religious freedom without hindrance. The court also ordered that authorities ensure that affected pilgrims are not impeded in their Hajj pilgrimage.
