The end of this year’s Hajj pilgrimage signals the start of a 33-year cycle which will see the holy season move from summer to spring and winter, before returning full circle to the summer again. According to climate expert Dr. Abdullah Al-Misnad, the pilgrimage advances around 11 days each year with respect to the Gregorian calendar. As a result, the city of Makkah typically experiences scorching temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius in June during the summer season. After this year, the Hajj pilgrimage will take place during the spring season for nine years and then shift to winter for eight years from 1454 AH until 1461 AH. The final pilgrimage during the seasonal cycle will take place in the fall of 1462 AH, before the cycle begins again. The change of seasons for the pilgrimage, while lasting 33 years, does not impact the significance of the event for followers of Islam.
