Haitian Beach Town Mayor Arrested in Connection with Assassination of President Moïse

The mayor of a seaside Haitian beach town, Marky Kessa, was arrested on Monday in Port-au-Prince in connection with the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Kessa’s arrest was ordered by the Haitian judge overseeing the investigation, and he is now among at least seven participants in a meeting at the Tower Club in downtown Fort Lauderdale who are now jailed.

The Broward meeting, which took place in early April 2021, has been alleged by Haitian authorities to have played a key role in the plot to kill President Moïse. The president was shot inside his bedroom after Colombian commandos, accompanied by two Haitian Americans and local police, stormed his residence in the middle of the night.

Kessa’s arrest comes as part of the ongoing investigation led by Judge Walter Wesser Voltaire, who has recently taken action by ordering new suspects to appear and issuing arrest warrants. The investigation has been characterized by high turnover of judges and allegations of corruption.

While Kessa’s arrest is expected to not be the last in Haiti, where 17 people are in custody but awaiting formal charges, progress has been made in the investigation. In the United States, a parallel investigation has already resulted in three suspects pleading guilty.

It is important to note that the mayor’s arrest does not implicate those connected to the meeting in downtown Fort Lauderdale in any criminal activity related to the assassination. However, the investigation continues to uncover new leads and involve individuals who may have had knowledge or involvement in the plot.

The arrest of Kessa and the ongoing investigation signal a push to bring justice to the assassinated president and shed light on the circumstances surrounding his death. As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on uncovering the truth and holding accountable all those involved in this brazen act of violence.

In the midst of these developments, Haiti continues to grapple with political instability and the need to rebuild and move forward. The arrest of Kessa serves as a reminder of the challenges the country faces in achieving stability and ensuring the safety of its leaders.

The investigation into the assassination of President Moïse will undoubtedly continue to garner international attention as more details emerge and individuals are brought to justice. The Haitian people, along with the global community, await answers and hope for a thorough and transparent resolution to this shocking tragedy.
