KITIMAT, BC, Jan. 4, 2024 – The Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corporation (Pembina) have announced the selection of Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) and Black & Veatch for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a state-of-the-art floating LNG production unit (FLNG) for the proposed Cedar LNG Project. This milestone brings the project, set within British Columbia’s Kitimat, closer to becoming the world’s first Indigenous majority-owned LNG project.

The Cedar LNG Chief Executive Officer, Doug Arnell, expressed his excitement, stating, We have secured world-class FLNG expertise and look forward to working with SHI and Black & Veatch to build an LNG facility with one of the cleanest environmental profiles in the world that will usher in a new era of low carbon, sustainable LNG production.

Pembina’s Chairman and CEO, Mario Azar, emphasized the company’s commitment to delivering a reliable and resilient global energy supply as a leader in the world’s energy transition. He stated, Our role in helping Cedar LNG make history on this world-class facility aligns with our commitment to deliver a reliable and resilient global energy supply as a leader in the world’s energy transition.

With major regulatory approvals in place and signed memorandums of understanding for long-term liquefaction services, the Cedar LNG Project has now entered the advanced planning and development stage. A Final Investment Decision (FID) is expected by the end of the first quarter of 2024, setting the stage for potential onshore construction to commence in the second quarter of 2024.

The Cedar LNG Project is a result of a partnership between the Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipeline Corporation. Situated within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, the facility will be strategically positioned to leverage Canada’s abundant natural gas supply and BC’s LNG infrastructure. Furthermore, the use of renewable electricity from BC Hydro will make Cedar LNG one of the lowest carbon intensity LNG facilities in the world.

With an ambition to create a powerful, prosperous, and proud community, the Haisla Nation aims to achieve self-sufficiency through sustainable economic development. By partnering with government, business, and the community, they seek to build a strong and thriving society while maintaining a sustained and prosperous environment.

Pembina Pipeline Corporation, a prominent energy transportation and midstream service provider, has played a vital role in North America’s energy industry for over 65 years. By owning an integrated network of pipelines, gathering and processing facilities, and export terminals, Pembina aims to provide safe and reliable energy solutions that connect producers and consumers worldwide.

As the Cedar LNG project partners move closer to the final investment decision, this significant milestone sets the stage for the development of a groundbreaking LNG facility. With a focus on environmental sustainability and fostering Indigenous participation, Cedar LNG is positioned to make a substantial impact on the LNG industry as a whole.
