London Police Increase Security Measures After Hackers Expose Personal Details of Officers and Staff
London’s Metropolitan Police force has announced heightened security measures following a cyberattack on one of its supplier companies, resulting in the exposure of personal information about its officers and staff. Late on Saturday, the force confirmed the occurrence of an unauthorized access to the IT system of the unnamed supplier.
The compromised data includes names, ranks, photos, vetting levels, and payroll numbers of the police force’s personnel. However, critical personal information such as addresses, phone numbers, and financial details were not held by the supplier. The Metropolitan Police force is actively collaborating with the affected company to determine the extent of the breach and any potential ramifications for the security of its data. The incident has also been reported to the National Crime Agency for further investigation.
The breach has sparked both concern and anger among members of the Metropolitan Police Federation, a staff association representing police officers. Federation Vice Chair Rick Prior described the security breach as staggering and emphasized the need for robust safeguards and checks to protect such valuable personal information. He acknowledged the potential detrimental impact if this information were to fall into the wrong hands.
This recent breach follows a similar incident last month involving the Police Service of Northern Ireland, which inadvertently published personal information about over 10,000 officers and staff. Authorities fear that Irish Republican Army dissidents, who still pose a threat to law enforcement even after 25 years of peace in Northern Ireland, might have obtained the exposed information.
