Gymnastics Ireland Faces Scrutiny Over Discrimination Incident
In a distressing turn of events, Gymnastics Ireland is under scrutiny after an incident of discrimination involving a young black gymnast during a GymSTART competition. A video capturing the heart-wrenching moment when the young girl was intentionally snubbed during the medal presentation has gone viral, attracting widespread attention and condemnation.
The video, which took place in Dublin in March 2022, has prompted notable gymnast Simone Biles to speak out, expressing her heartbreak at witnessing the incident. As backlash mounted following the video’s circulation, Gymnastics Ireland released a statement claiming that the issue had been resolved through mediation in August 2023.
The statement provided further details, explaining that a complaint had been made by the parents of one of Gymnastics Ireland’s members, alleging racist behavior by one of the officials at the event. Acting according to their policy and protocols, Gymnastics Ireland launched an investigation upon receiving the complaint. The official in question acknowledged that what occurred was unacceptable, although unintentional, taking immediate steps to rectify the mistake and ensure the young gymnast received her medal before leaving the Field of Play (FoP).
The identified official expressed deep regret and requested an opportunity to personally apologize to the gymnast and her family, a request that was initially denied. However, a written apology has since been issued to the gymnast and her family.
Gymnastics Ireland emphasized its commitment to inclusivity, highlighting the diverse community they foster with members from various races, ages, genders, sexualities, and socio-economic backgrounds. Their Safeguarding policies set out clear expectations for behavior, not just from coaches and gymnasts but also from clubs, officials, administrators, parents/guardians, and event attendees.
