A Greensboro Police Officer has tragically lost his life after being shot during an incident on Saturday evening. The shooting took place at the Sheetz convenience store located at 3202 Sandy Ridge Road. The officer, an off-duty Greensboro Police Sergeant, had witnessed a crime occurring and approached the suspects, but was shot in the process. Other off-duty officers and a Guilford County Paramedic present at the scene promptly provided aid, but unfortunately, the Sergeant succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local medical facility.
In a statement, Police Chief John Thompsons mourned the loss of the officer, describing him as a devoted family man with 22 years of dedicated service to the department. Chief Thompsons requested prayers for the fallen officer’s family and the Greensboro PD family. He expressed gratitude to numerous organizations and leaders, including Governor Cooper, for their condolences and assistance during this challenging time.
Governor Roy Cooper also released a statement after a Blue Alert was issued around 8 p.m. A Blue Alert, which functions similarly to an Amber Alert, is activated to provide critical information to the public and aid in the apprehension of individuals who have allegedly killed, seriously injured, or abducted a law enforcement officer. Governor Cooper assured Chief Thompsons of the state’s support and offered all available resources to apprehend those responsible for the officer’s death.
Media outlets have reported that the Blue Alert issued for two suspects was canceled following the shooting of the officer. The investigation into this tragic incident remains active and ongoing, with more information anticipated in the coming days.
