Grand Rapids Man Kills Wife a Day After Receiving Divorce Papers

A tragic incident unfolded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, when a man allegedly shot and killed his wife the day after she served him divorce papers. Marcus Durayalle Lofton is now facing charges of open murder and felony firearm, and he is being held in jail without bond.

The couple had recently gotten married in February, but their relationship quickly deteriorated. On August 17, Grand Rapids police received a report of shots fired in the area of Adams Street SE and Union Avenue. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered Alicia Danielle Lofton lying lifeless next to a house on Union Avenue SE. She had suffered fatal gunshot wounds to her head and body.

Investigators soon identified Marcus Lofton as a possible suspect and located him walking on North Avenue NE. During the subsequent interview with detectives, Lofton admitted to shooting his wife. He shared that she had served him divorce papers the previous day and informed him that she intended to sell their house. Due to a previous arrest for alleged domestic violence against his wife in May, he was not supposed to be in contact with her.

According to Lofton’s statement, an argument ensued between the couple at around 8 a.m. on August 17 when he visited Alicia at the Union Avenue house. During the dispute, he grabbed his wife’s Glock pistol and attempted to strike her with it. In the course of the struggle, the gun accidentally discharged. Alicia then sought refuge in a bedroom and locked the door.

Marcus Lofton forced his way into the room and found his wife attempting to escape through a window. He tragically admitted to shooting her multiple times before fleeing the scene in his maroon SUV. The details of this shocking incident have left the community in shock and mourning.

The court proceedings for Marcus Lofton are scheduled to continue with a preliminary exam on September 5. As the legal process unfolds, the incident serves as a harrowing reminder of the tragic consequences that can ensue from domestic disputes.
