Grace Community School Cougars Stage a Spectacular Comeback to Defeat Brook Hill
In an exhilarating football showdown between the Grace Community School Cougars and Brook Hill, the Cougars emerged victorious with an incredible comeback. On September 9, in a back-and-forth battle, the visiting Cougars managed to slip past Brook Hill with a final score of 23-19. The win brought the Cougars’ record to an impressive 3-0, while Brook Hill’s record dipped to 1-2.
The game was marked by intense competition and remarkable plays from both teams. In the third quarter, Brook Hill’s Guard took control of the game, outscoring Grace Community School 16-6 and carrying a 19-13 advantage into the fourth period. Braxton Durrett showcased his skills with a 2-yard run, followed by a successful 2-point conversion run by Carlos Afre, which gave Brook Hill their first lead of the night at 11-7 with just 4:18 left in the third quarter.
The tides quickly turned when a Cougar managed to sprint 42 yards and score a touchdown, placing the visitors back on top at 13-11 with only 1:32 to play in the third stanza. However, in a mere fifteen seconds, Guard quarterback Jonah McCown connected with Xavier Kendrick for an impressive 75-yard catch and run for a touchdown. Although the PAT was unsuccessful, the Guard found themselves in front once again, leading 19-13.
Despite the Guard’s strong performance, the Cougars were determined not to go down without a fight. In the final segment of the game, Grace Community School rallied and outscored Brook Hill 10-0, ultimately securing the victory.
The Cougars’ defense played a pivotal role in limiting Brook Hill to a mere 22 total rushing yards, with Durrett accounting for all of those yards in 14 carries. McCown showcased his passing prowess, going 13-26-1 and accumulating an impressive 265 yards through the air, including one touchdown pass. Kendrick emerged as the top pass catcher for the Guard, making four grabs for an impressive 157 yards.
Several standout defensive players for the Guard included Marcelo Martinez with 11 tackles, Ryder Williams with six tackles and three pass deflections, Samuel Williams with six tackles, one tackle for loss, and one sack, and Aaron Pakarinen with one tackle, one tackle for loss, and one sack.
Looking ahead, Brook Hill is scheduled to face off against White Oak, who currently holds a record of 0-3. The game is set to take place next Friday, with kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
