The Indian government has officially allowed the import of pet coke for the use of making graphite anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The material will not be allowed for any other purposes, including fuel. Pet coke, specifically needle pet coke, is used as a primary material for the electrodes used in an electric steel furnace that melts and refines steel scrap. Graphite, on the other hand, is commonly used as an anode material in lithium-ion batteries. The sulphur content in the imported pet coke should not exceed 0.8%, which would be monitored by state pollution control boards. The import of low-sulphur pet coke is also restricted unless it is authorized by the Directorate for use in integrated steel plants only. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India has set the terms and conditions for this importation. The allowance of imported pet coke is an important step in supporting the development of electric vehicles in India.
