Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi’s rejection of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s recommendation to re-allocate the portfolios of V. Senthilbalaji, who is currently arrested in a money-laundering case and hospitalised, has stirred up memories of a similar incident 29 years ago. In 1994, the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa recommended that certain Minister portfolios be changed, but there was no response from the Governor until over a month later. Jayalalithaa then announced the changes herself, citing urgent cases that allowed for allotment by the Chief Minister and were to be circled to the Governor afterward. The current Governor decided to reject the Chief Minister’s recommendation instead of ignoring it. Former Electricity Minister Panruti S. Ramachandran believes that the Governor should not interfere with the routine matters of the government, while AIADMK’s Rajya Sabha member and former Law Minister, C.Ve. Shanmugam, thinks that the Chief Minister should have presented full facts about Senthilbalaji to the Governor, who he says cannot be expected to blindly follow the government’s line.
