New York governor apologizes after implying Israel is justified to destroy Gaza

WASHINGTON – New York Governor Kathy Hochul apologized for remarks she made at a Jewish philanthropy event in New York City, suggesting Israel had justification to destroy Gaza following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack.

If Canada someday ever attacked Buffalo, I’m sorry, my friends, there would be no Canada the next day, Hochul said, emphasizing Israel’s right to defend itself.

On Friday, she expressed regret for her inappropriate analogy and apologized for her poor choice of words.

While I support Israel’s right to self-defense, I believe Palestinian civilian casualties should be avoided, Hochul stated.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, with the U.N. calling for a ceasefire as the region’s population faces dire circumstances. Rights advocates note a rise in antisemitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Arab bias in the U.S. since the conflict began.
