Farmers in India will now be able to sell unlimited amounts of tur, urad, and masur dals under the price support scheme (PSS) for the 2023-24 period, as the government has removed the procurement ceiling in an effort to boost domestic production. The move is expected to encourage more farmers to sow these pulses in the upcoming Kharif and Rabi seasons. At the same time, officials have directed state governments to monitor prices and stock levels of these pulses to ensure that farmers are not taken advantage of. On 2 June, the government imposed stock limits on tur and urad to prevent hoarding and improve affordability for consumers. This restriction applies to importers, millers, large-chain retailers, wholesalers, and retailers. Officials have demanded that state governments enforce the limits and verify prices and stock positions at various warehouse operators.
