Andhra Pradesh Government Accused of Plotting to Withdraw Free Power Scheme for Agriculture Sector

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) media chairman, Dr. N Tulasi Reddy, has alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government is plotting to wind up the Free Power Supply Scheme (FPSS) for farmers. According to Reddy, this scheme is being discontinued to meet the conditions set by the BJP-led NDA government in order to secure additional loans.

In a press statement released on Friday, Reddy highlighted that neighboring states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana are opposing the proposal of the central government to install meters on agriculture motors. However, the YSRCP government in Andhra Pradesh, burdened by debt, has accepted this proposal in order to secure more loans.

Reddy expressed concern that if the state government proceeds with the installation of meters on agriculture motors, farmers may be unable to afford the high power tariffs, leading to a widespread abandonment of cultivation. He emphasized that in Andhra Pradesh, many small and marginal farmers have already switched to other professions due to the rising costs of cultivation. Reddy demanded that the government retract its proposal to install meters in the best interest of the farmers.

The potential withdrawal of the Free Power Supply Scheme has sparked a heated debate among various stakeholders. Proponents argue that the installation of meters would provide more accurate power consumption data and help reduce wastage, ultimately benefiting both the government and consumers. However, opponents, like Reddy, believe that the imposition of tariffs would place an undue financial burden on farmers, potentially driving them away from agriculture.

Some experts argue that the introduction of meters could be a step towards ensuring fair electricity distribution and preventing misuse. They suggest that it would offer transparency and promote a more efficient and accountable system. However, critics argue that the government should focus on supporting farmers and finding alternative solutions to address the agricultural sector’s challenges, instead of burdening them with additional costs.

The fate of the Free Power Supply Scheme remains uncertain as the Andhra Pradesh government weighs the potential consequences of its decision. The concerns raised by critics like Reddy highlight the delicate balance between facilitating economic development and safeguarding the interests of the agriculture sector, particularly the small and marginal farmers who play a crucial role in sustaining the country’s food security.

As discussions and deliberations continue, it is important to consider the long-term implications of withdrawing or implementing the proposed changes. The government must strike a balance that ensures the sustainability of the agricultural sector while addressing the financial constraints and loan conditions imposed by the central government.

In the coming days, stakeholders will closely monitor the government’s response and eagerly await its decision regarding the future of the Free Power Supply Scheme. Meanwhile, the fate of Andhra Pradesh’s farmers hangs in the balance, as they grapple with the uncertainty surrounding their access to free power and the potential impact on their livelihoods.
