Congresswoman Barbara Lee Criticizes Proposed GOP Immigration Deal

Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, voiced her opposition to the proposed GOP immigration deal, highlighting the lack of comprehensive immigration reform and inclusion of diverse perspectives.

Lee emphasized that the Republican Party, led by former President Donald Trump, is more interested in playing political games than finding solutions to America’s challenges. She stated, This latest failed attempt at legislating by the GOP clearly illustrates that the party of Trump has no interest in solving America’s challenges, only playing political games.

Lee stressed the importance of supporting a border deal that incorporates meaningful and comprehensive immigration reform while considering the perspectives of Black, Brown, and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) members of Congress. She argued that the GOP package offered nothing more than a collection of Trump-era policies, lacking the ability to bring lasting security to the border.

The congresswoman warned that an enforcement-only approach, like the one suggested in the deal, would exacerbate existing issues, leading to inhumane conditions and empowering criminal organizations. Lee firmly stated, Border security without comprehensive immigration reform will not work.

Lee called for significant improvements in the immigration system, advocating for a humane, orderly, and modernized process. She highlighted the need to increase legal pathways for work and family visas, protect farmworkers, dreamers, refugees, and asylum seekers, and invest in resources to ensure orderly processing at the border and eliminate visa backlogs.

Expressing disappointment in the GOP deal, Lee criticized the party’s focus on racist, xenophobic policies instead of pursuing commonsense, comprehensive immigration reform. She emphasized that Democrats are willing and eager to come to the table to address these issues.

In summary, Congresswoman Barbara Lee rejected the proposed GOP immigration deal, citing its failure to address comprehensive immigration reform and incorporate the perspectives of diverse members of Congress. She called for a more humane and modernized immigration system, urging increased legal pathways, protection for vulnerable groups, and investments in resources for efficient border processing. The congresswoman sharply criticized the Republican Party’s emphasis on divisive policies and expressed Democrats’ readiness to engage in the pursuit of commonsense solutions to immigration challenges.
