Google Launches €25M AI Drive to ‘Empower’ Europe’s Workforce

Google has unveiled a new €25 million training and skills program aimed at helping Europe’s workforce harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), the company announced today. This initiative specifically focuses on supporting vulnerable and underserved communities that are at risk of being left behind due to the rapid adoption of AI in the workplace.

To reach those who stand to benefit the most from training, Google has opened applications for social enterprises and nonprofits. Selected organizations will receive tailored and facilitated training on foundational AI, along with cash grants to provide essential support like childcare or compensation for pay, thus eliminating potential barriers to learning.

The executive director of the London-based Centre for Public Impact, Adrian Brown, emphasized the importance of addressing existing inequalities in relation to AI. He stated, AI has enormous potential to transform the world for the better — yet research shows that the benefits of AI could exacerbate existing inequalities. This new program will help people across Europe develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence around AI, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Furthermore, Google has announced it will organize a series of growth academies to aid startups that are using AI to tackle challenges in areas such as health, education, and cybersecurity. Among these, the Growth Academy: AI for Health is now accepting applications. The company has assured applicants that it will not claim a stake in their ventures if they secure funding.

Additionally, Google plans to expand its AI foundational courses to 18 languages, further broadening accessibility and inclusivity.

This latest initiative from Google follows its Grow with Google program launched in 2015, aimed at addressing the digital skills gap in the European Union (EU). Since the inception of that program, Google claims to have upskilled over 12 million individuals.

Google’s commitment to empowering Europe’s workforce through AI training demonstrates its continued efforts to bridge the digital divide and equip individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in the evolving job market. By targeting vulnerable and underserved communities, Google aims to ensure that opportunities afforded by AI are accessible to all, leaving no one behind.

In conclusion, Google’s €25 million AI drive seeks to empower Europe’s workforce, emphasizing inclusivity and skill development. Through partnerships with social enterprises and nonprofits, Google aims to provide customized training and essential support to those most in need. By doing so, the tech giant hopes to foster a more equitable and inclusive technological landscape for all.
