Google has announced plans to launch an anti-misinformation campaign ahead of the European Union (EU) elections. The initiative, which will run in five EU countries, aims to combat the spread of misleading content online as concerns rise about its potential impact on voters. France, Poland, and Germany have recently accused Russia of using a network of websites to spread pro-Russian propaganda. The campaign will be led by Google’s Jigsaw unit and will utilize animated ads on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. The ads will incorporate prebunking techniques, developed in collaboration with researchers at the Universities of Cambridge and Bristol, to help users recognize manipulative content before encountering it. In addition to the animated ads, viewers will be asked to complete a multiple-choice questionnaire on YouTube to assess their knowledge of misinformation. The campaign is set to run for at least one month, with the hope of extending it based on performance and reach. The results of the campaign will be published in the summer of 2024.
