Google Quietly Integrates AI Model ‘Goose’ To Enhance Code Writing Efficiency For Employees: Report

Alphabet Inc.’s Google has implemented an internal AI model called Goose to assist its employees in writing code more efficiently, according to internal documents seen by Business Insider. Goose is a descendant of Gemini, Google’s large language model, and has been trained on Google’s 25 years of engineering expertise.

The AI model is designed to answer questions, write code using internal technology stacks, and support novel capabilities such as editing code based on natural language prompts. This introduction is part of Google’s wider efforts to increase efficiency, which has entailed job cuts and reorganizations within the company over the past year.

Google’s finance chief, Ruth Porat, previously mentioned initiatives like this during the company’s earnings call. She stated that Google was working to streamline operations across Alphabet by utilizing AI as a tactic to slow expense growth.

Goose is just one component of Google’s plan to integrate AI into every stage of the product development process, as outlined in internal documentation. While the AI model is reportedly available for employee use, it remains unclear whether the model is fully functional in terms of its capabilities.

Alphabet Inc. did not respond immediately when asked for comment by Benzinga.

The implementation of Goose by Google coincides with the company’s efforts to enhance AI skills in Europe. Recently, Google pledged to invest 25 million euros ($26.98 million) in Europe to promote AI skills by collaborating with social enterprises and non-profits to ensure that training reaches those who stand to benefit the most.

Furthermore, Google has been consolidating its AI endeavors under the brand name Gemini and expanding its free online AI training courses to be accessible in 18 languages. However, this move has raised concerns about AI’s reliability after Google’s Gemini chatbot was found to generate false statistics for the 2024 Super Bowl.

Google’s commitment to AI extends beyond its internal operations. The company, along with Microsoft, has tapped into India’s vast pool of AI talent to foster the adoption of AI through high-profile visits by their top executives.

In conclusion, Google’s integration of the internal AI model Goose aims to enhance code writing efficiency for its employees. This move aligns with the company’s broader focus on AI, as it seeks to streamline operations and promote AI skills both internally and externally.
