Google for Startups has announced the 10 Black-led start-ups that will receive its $4m Black Founders Fund this year. With less than 0.25% of venture capital funding distributed to Black-led start-ups before the fund’s launch in 2021, the programme provides equity-free grants and mentoring to early-stage, high-growth businesses without limitations placed on the funds they receive. Fully a quarter of the 40 start-ups selected this year are UK-based, the largest proportion of any country in Europe and Africa. Google for Startups has invested $3.9m in 46 UK start-ups since 2021, which subsequently raised more than $110m in follow-on funding.
