Google shares details on how to restore Google Drive backups after a bug wiped off user data
Google has released an update for users who lost their Google Drive files last month due to a bug in the Drive desktop app. The company has provided fixes and instructions to help users restore their lost data.
The bug, which affected version 84 of the Drive desktop app, caused some file changes to not sync on the Drive. However, it did not impact any file changes that had already been synced and were visible on the Drive mobile app or the web interface.
To address the issue, users must download and install the latest version of the Drive app for desktop (version 85.0.13.0 or higher). After installation, they need to open the Drive app from the taskbar tray, press shift, and click on settings. Then, by clicking on Recover from backups, the recovery process will begin. Drive will notify users once the recovery is complete, and a new folder named Google Drive Recovery will be created on their desktop with the unsynced files.
In case users encounter any difficulties with the recovery tool, Google advises them to provide feedback through the Drive desktop app using the hashtag #DFD84.
Google has also shared a command line method for users with a backup of the Drive for desktop account directory in another location, or those who want to restore files to a specific location. This method is available for both Windows and Mac users.
For users who have uninstalled the app or disconnected their accounts, Google recommends using Windows Backup or macOS Time Machine to restore their systems to a previous state when the Drive cache was still available. Once the system is restored, they can follow the command line method to recover the missing data.
Google assures users that they are actively working on a solution to make files accessible even for those who uninstalled the app or disconnected their accounts. They expect the solution to be available in the next few days.
During this time, Google advises users not to click Disconnect account within Drive for desktop and not to delete or move the app data folder.
In summary, users affected by the bug can now take advantage of the fixes and recovery options provided by Google to restore their lost Google Drive files. By following the instructions and utilizing the available tools, users can regain access to their unsynced data and preserve their important files.
Remember to stay updated with the latest information from Google and follow their directions to ensure a seamless restoration process.
