Google is investing $1 billion to construct a new data centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, in the UK. The aim is to support the country’s increasing demands for cloud services and artificial intelligence (AI). The facility will cover a 33-acre site that Google purchased in 2020. Apart from creating jobs in the local community, Google’s investment will bring crucial compute capacity to businesses across the UK, promote AI innovation, and ensure reliable services for global customers of Google Cloud. Ruth Porat, CFO of Google’s parent company Alphabet, highlighted the significance of this investment in meeting the growing demand for AI and cloud services. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak praised Google’s commitment, citing it as evidence of the country’s technology excellence and potential for future growth. This investment follows Microsoft’s recent announcement of a £2.5 billion commitment to expand its AI data centres in the UK.
