Google Bard’s Massive New Update? Gemini, a New Language Model

If you’ve tried Google Bard, you know it can be… wonky. This new update is designed to change that.

Google announced on Wednesday that its AI chatbot, Bard, is getting the new Gemini language model the company has been testing. Gemini is Google’s most capable [AI] model with sophisticated multimodal reasoning capabilities. This update aims to put Bard on par with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and improve its performance.

Gemini will be rolled out to Bard in two phases. The first release allows the current version of Bard to tap into Gemini Pro, which provides more advanced reasoning, planning, and understanding. In early 2024, Bard Advanced will receive Gemini Ultra, enabling it to handle large and complicated tasks often required by enterprises.

In addition to the Pro and Ultra versions, Google also unveiled Gemini Nano, designed for on-device tasks. The Pixel 8 Pro will be the first device to have Gemini Nano built-in. This update will introduce two expanded features, Summarize in Recorder and Smart Reply in Gboard, utilizing the power of Google Tensor G3. The release for Pixel 8 Pro begins today, with plans to unlock new capabilities for the Assistant with Bard experience early next year.

Google has conducted industry-standard benchmarks to validate the performance of Gemini Pro. Outperforming GPT-3.5 in six out of eight benchmarks, including the Massive Multitask Language Understanding (MMLU) and GSM8K for math reasoning, Gemini Pro shows promising results.

To demonstrate Gemini’s capabilities, Google partnered with science educator and YouTuber Mark Rober. Together, they used Gemini to build a paper airplane, showcasing its sophisticated reasoning abilities. The results were impressive and provided a glimpse of Gemini’s potential.

With Google’s determination to make Bard a strong rival to ChatGPT, the addition of Gemini is a significant step forward. Bard with Gemini aims to enhance user experiences and provide better results when compared to the previous versions. Google CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the potential of AI to create opportunities and be beneficial to people worldwide.

The update will undoubtedly attract users eager for improved performance and capabilities from Bard. As Gemni rolls out and users begin to explore its advanced reasoning and planning abilities, it will be interesting to see how this new language model transforms the Google Bard experience.
