Forest officials in Maharashtra have granted clearance to Adani Power Maharashtra Limited’s proposal to develop an underground coal mine in Gondkhari. Documents obtained by The Times of India show that clearance for 87.351 hectares of forested land was recommended by former Chief Conservator of Forests Rangnath Naikade on 28 March, two months before he retired.
Naikade claimed that no wildlife would be affected, and no trees would need to be felled, as the opening of the mine would be on non-forest land. The mine’s location is 34km from Mansinghdeo sanctuary and 20km from Bor Tiger Reserve. Adani officials also assured concerned residents that the project would be environmentally safe and the wider CSR efforts would benefit countless local communities. However, some activists and green campaigners are concerned that the mine could harm the landscape with noise and water and air pollution.
