The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state of Goa is reportedly struggling to provide financial aid to beneficiaries under various schemes due to a debt of INR 24,175.93 crore ($3.3 billion), with opposition parties frequently criticizing the government for its inability to do so. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently declared that the government will not require loans after two years, though the cost of implementing schemes such as providing three free cooking gas cylinders to low-income families could increase the state’s yearly financial burden by INR 30 crore ($4 million). The opposition Goa Forward party has accused Sawant of not doing enough to improve the state’s economy through measures such as restarting mining operations, and in particular, its failure to provide clear plans to reduce the debt. Contractors have also complained of delayed payments.
