COIMBATORE – A young Dalit girl in Tamil Nadu continues to seek justice, ten months after she was allegedly sexually harassed by her physical education teacher. The victim, a ninth-grade student at a government school, initially reported the incident to her teachers and school administrators, but they failed to take immediate action. Instead, they attempted to settle the matter privately. It was only in December 2023 that the incident came to light, leading to the registration of a case against the PE teacher under sections 9 (l) and 10 of the Pocso Act. However, the victim and her family are frustrated with the slow progress of the investigation. They claim that despite providing the police with a detailed complaint, identifying other teachers involved in covering up the incident, the authorities have only focused on the perpetrator. The family is now urging for a thorough investigation into the role of other individuals who may have been complicit in the heinous act.
Speaking about the case, the victim’s mother expressed her disappointment, saying, Though we submitted a detailed complaint two months ago mentioning the names of other teachers who tried to cover up the issue, the police booked the case only on the perpetrator and continued investigation against others at a snail’s pace. The family fears that justice may never be served for their daughter if the involvement of others is not taken seriously.
This delayed pursuit of justice highlights the plight faced by many victims of sexual abuse and harassment, particularly when the perpetrators hold positions of power or influence. The case has once again shed light on the importance of prompt and thorough investigations in such matters.
