Germany Tempts Foreign Workers, despite Discrimination

A recently released survey conducted by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) has revealed that Germany continues to be an attractive destination for skilled workers from abroad. However, the survey also shed light on a troubling issue: a significant number of foreign workers already living in Germany reported experiencing racism and discrimination in their everyday lives.

The survey, which began in August 2022, tracked the careers of nearly 30,000 highly qualified individuals who expressed interest in working in Germany. After a year, it was found that only around 5% of those individuals actually followed through with their plans to move to Germany.

Disturbingly, over half of the foreign workers who did relocate to Germany reported facing discrimination when it came to renting or buying housing. Additionally, 37% of respondents shared instances of discrimination while visiting restaurants or shops. These types of discriminatory incidents were less prevalent when it came to dealing with schools and public authorities, excluding immigration offices. The workplace also proved to be less discriminatory overall.

Racism remains a significant concern in Germany. Around 15% of respondent foreign workers reported experiencing discrimination at the hands of the police, while 28% said it occurred within their workplace.

The survey also revealed that early contact with a German employer and proficiency in the German language were crucial factors for those who successfully made the move to Germany. The majority of those who migrated, roughly 50%, were employed in the IT field or engineering. Another 10% were healthcare workers.

For those individuals who still expressed interest in moving to Germany but had not yet done so, many cited complicated procedures and long visa waiting times as hurdles. Fear of discrimination was also a factor deterring potential migrants.

Germany’s reputation as an attractive destination for skilled foreign workers is overshadowed by the concerning issue of racism and discrimination faced by those already living and working in the country. While steps have been taken to address these challenges, more needs to be done to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all residents.

As Germany continues to attract professionals from around the world, it is crucial that concerted efforts are made to combat racism and discrimination in all areas of society. By fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment, Germany can truly become a destination that not only lures talent from abroad but also ensures their well-being and success within its borders.
