Germany in talks with EU partners on Red Sea maritime mission
Germany is discussing the possibility of joining a Red Sea maritime mission with its EU partners to counter ongoing attacks by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. A spokesperson for the German government confirmed that they are ready for action but emphasized that no decision has been made yet. The attacks by the Houthis, including the seizure and targeting of ships with missiles and drones since November 19, are seen as a response to Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza and a deadly incident in southern Yemen. While the United States has initiated a new maritime force called Operation Prosperity Guardian, some allies are hesitant to participate. Germany is currently evaluating its potential involvement in this US-led mission. There are also discussions in Brussels about extending the existing EU anti-piracy mission, Atalanta, to safeguard Red Sea shipping. However, no definitive steps have been taken in this regard. Spain has expressed opposition to expanding Atalanta and has proposed the creation of a different mission to address the issue. The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, expressed his willingness to consider alternative approaches. As the situation evolves, the international community is carefully considering its options to protect maritime interests and ensure stability in the region.
