German defense minister Boris Pistorius recently met with his counterpart Rajnath Singh in India to negotiate a deal for six German submarines to be manufactured in India. The submarines are to be made by Thyssenkrupp, which is set to conduct a meeting with Indian public sector shipbuilder, Mazagaon Dock. While the deal will require significant time to complete, the German defense industry is keen to establish greater cooperation with India, which is part of a series of measures taken by Western nations to build closer ties despite India’s abstaining from condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. During talks, Singh used the opportunity to tout India’s Make in India initiative, which seeks to encourage domestic manufacturing and reduce foreign dependence. The agreement is reportedly worth around $5.2 billion and represents significant potential earnings for both sides.
