Germany’s Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has praised the Turkey-EU agreement as an effective tool in curbing illegal migration. Speaking at a summit in Granada, Spain, Scholz highlighted the agreement’s positive impact over the past few years. The 2016 Turkey-EU migration agreement significantly reduced the flow of migrants entering Europe via the Aegean Sea and played a crucial role in saving lives. However, the implementation of the agreement faced various challenges, leading to criticism from both sides. Ankara accused its European partners of not fulfilling their political commitments and providing sufficient financial resources to address the refugee crisis.

Meanwhile, the EU summit in Granada, Spain, faced some obstacles as Poland and Hungary blocked a planned declaration on migration policy and other strategically important issues. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki vetoed the part related to migration, while Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed further resistance to EU asylum reform plans. Orban stated that Hungary and Poland had been legally raped after important decisions were made against their will.
