Gender Pay Gap in European Tech Narrows at Executive Level, but Still Persists in Entry and Junior Roles

In line with wider conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), the persisting gender pay gap continues to be a concern. Despite efforts to close the gap, progress has been slow. Recent data from the Pew Research Center shows that in the U.S., women still earn just 82 cents for every dollar earned by men, compared to 80 cents back in 2002. In the European Union, women earn on average 12.7% less than their male counterparts. While these figures paint a disheartening picture, a new report from compensation platform Ravio brings positive news.

According to Ravio’s report, at the executive level in European tech, there is no gender pay gap. However, when analyzing certain pay gaps at lower levels, some disparities emerge. Entry-level roles experience a 2% pay gap, junior jobs show a 22% differential for women, and female managers face a 17% gap.

These findings suggest that the pay gap narrows as women climb the tech ladder, indicating that women in executive positions have a better understanding of their market value and the experience to negotiate offers. Such insights reinforce the importance of empowering women and promoting their advancement in the industry.

The European Commission has taken steps to address the gender pay gap on a macro level, adopting legislation on work-life balance, gender balance in corporate boards, and a Pay Transparency Directive that grants workers the right to enforce equal pay. Nevertheless, it is crucial to continue pushing for progress at all levels, ensuring fair compensation practices and opportunities for women.

For those considering a job switch, it is an ideal time to negotiate for better compensation. Whether it’s increasing salaries, pension contributions, bonuses, or share schemes, employees can aim to add 10-15% to their annual earnings. Recognizing the importance of job satisfaction and fair remuneration, the Silicon Canals Job Board offers a myriad of job opportunities across Europe.

One such opportunity is at Pulsation-IT, where Java Developers play a crucial role in supporting the work of doctors, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians. Their code aids in digitalizing emergency services, and applicants should have a computer science degree or equivalent IT-related training, along with experience in Java EE, Jakarta EE, Spring, SQL, CI, TDD, and REST.

Another option is with the Eviden team, which focuses on digital transformation. They seek a Telecom Software Development Engineer with expertise in C/C++ and previous experience in designing software applications for mobile networks.

Additionally, InTraffic, an IT specialist in traffic and transport, is looking for a Software Developer proficient in C++ to contribute to improving travelers’ experiences and ensuring safety and flow. Applicants should possess relevant education, knowledge of development languages like C++, and strong analytical skills.

By highlighting these job opportunities, individuals are encouraged to explore diverse and inclusive workplaces where they can thrive and contribute to the closing of gender pay gaps. While progress may be slow on a broader scale, companies have the power to create change within their own organizations and lead the way towards a more equitable future.
