The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has filed a complaint against Tangedco official for digging up a newly re-laid road at Seniamman Koil Street in Tondiarpet. Tangedco dug up the road on Tuesday for emergency work, stating that residents in the area did not have power for almost eight hours due to a fire in the main cable. However, the GCC stated that the roads cannot be dug by service departments like Tangedco at least for a year, except in emergency cases when official permission must be obtained.
Residents of Corporation colony in Tondiarpet had been complaining about the poor state of the road, which had only undergone patchwork in the past two years and would flood during the monsoon season. After continuous complaints and protests, the GCC recently re-laid the road, only for it to be dug up by Tangedco.
Upon investigation, the zonal official filed a complaint against the Tangedco official for road cuts. The police issued a CSR (community service register) to the official, and after further investigation, they would file an FIR.
The Tangedco official explained that they replaced the wire in the area without obtaining permission to dig up the newly re-laid road in another area, which led to low voltage for several days. To avoid such situations, they carried out emergency work after the cable fire occurred.
Residents are left clueless as to what the emergency work was and why Tangedco dug up the newly re-laid road just a month after it was completed. The GCC’s restrictions on digging up roads aim to prevent unnecessary damage, and the recent incident has highlighted the importance of following these guidelines to avoid unnecessary costs and inconvenience to residents.
