Gaza’s Population in Grave Peril: Acute Hunger and Desperation Alarm World Health Organization, Palestinian Territory

The population of Gaza is facing grave peril, warns the World Health Organization (WHO). The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed concern over the acute hunger and desperation prevalent in the war-torn Palestinian territory. With 21 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza no longer functioning, the WHO has been delivering supplies to hospitals, but their efforts are increasingly hindered due to the dire circumstances.

Tedros called upon the international community to take urgent action in order to alleviate the peril faced by the people of Gaza. He highlighted the challenges faced by humanitarian workers who are trying to assist individuals with severe injuries, acute hunger, and the risk of disease. The need for food in Gaza remains acute, and hungry people have been stopping WHO convoys in search of sustenance.

The dire situation has not only impacted the delivery of food but also medicines, medical supplies, and fuel to hospitals. The WHO’s ability to provide these essential resources is being progressively limited by the hunger and desperation of individuals both en route to hospitals and within them.

The recent conflict between Hamas and Israel has left Gaza devastated. The bloodiest-ever Gaza war erupted with Hamas attacking southern Israel, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,140 people, mostly civilians. Additionally, 250 hostages were taken, with 129 of them remaining in Gaza, making it the worst attack in Israeli history. In response, Israel launched extensive aerial bombardment, followed by a ground invasion, resulting in the death of at least 21,110 people, primarily women and children.

Tedros emphasized the urgency of immediate food arrival to all of Gaza in order to ensure the safety of WHO staff and the continuity of operations. A recent resolution by the United Nations Security Council called for the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance, but did not demand an immediate cessation of hostilities. Tedros expressed disappointment that the resolution has yet to have a tangible impact based on firsthand accounts from the WHO.

He stressed the necessity of a ceasefire to protect civilians from further violence and initiate the arduous process of reconstruction and peace. The WHO’s call to action highlights the urgent need for global attention and assistance to alleviate the dire peril faced by the population of Gaza.

The WHO’s plea brings attention to the immediate challenges faced by the people of Gaza and the critical role humanitarian aid can play in alleviating suffering. With a focus on the human impact and urgent need for international support, the WHO is striving to garner attention and resources to alleviate the dire situation. The gravity of the situation in Gaza, characterized by acute hunger and limited access to essential medical care, underlines the urgency for swift action to ensure the well-being and survival of the population.
