Gaza Bombings: Extensive Destruction in Israeli Assault

The recent Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip has resulted in a staggering amount of destruction, with approximately 18,000 tons of bombs dropped since October 7. According to officials in Gaza, this equates to about 1.5 times the explosive force of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II. The besieged enclave has been left in ruins, with numerous government buildings, mosques, churches, and schools reduced to rubble.

Salama Marouf, Head of the government’s media office in Gaza, revealed that 85 government buildings have been destroyed, along with 47 mosques and significant damage inflicted upon three churches. The devastating attacks have caused over 200,000 buildings to be damaged, rendering 32,500 of them uninhabitable. Furthermore, 203 schools have sustained major damage, and 45 schools are now completely non-operational. Marouf emphasized that due to the intensity of the attacks, these statistics are not yet complete.

It is worth noting that under the Geneva Convention, attacking houses of worship, schools, and other civilian structures is prohibited. However, Israel claims that militants are using these buildings as shelters, thus justifying their actions. Nevertheless, such attacks on civilian infrastructure remain a grave violation of international law.

The consequences of these bombings extend far beyond demolished buildings. The loss of life has been devastating, with 908 families massacred and thousands of people killed as a result. Tragically, the casualties include 35 journalists, 124 healthcare workers, and 18 civil defense personnel who were part of emergency rescue teams. The conflict has taken a heavy toll, claiming the lives of over 10,300 individuals, including at least 8,796 Palestinians and more than 1,538 Israelis.

In addition to the staggering human cost, the people of Gaza are facing a dire humanitarian situation. The Israeli siege has severely limited the supply of basic necessities for the 2.3 million residents, exacerbating their already precarious living conditions.

As the situation in the region continues to escalate, it is crucial for international actors to actively seek a peaceful resolution and hold all parties accountable for their actions. The suffering endured by the people of Gaza cannot be ignored, and a concerted effort must be made to address their urgent needs and work towards a sustainable peace in the region.
