The Gauhati High Court in India has upheld its 2018 verdict clearing former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta of planning a series of killings over 20 years ago. The charges involved police killings of more than 400 people who were family members, relatives and supporters of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom between 1998 and 2001. The executions were known as gupto hoitya (secret killings) because they were never solved. Ajit Kumar Bhuyan and Ananta Kalita had filed an interlocutory application against the 2018 ruling. The court declared the accusations against Mahanta were a result of a political plot to damage his reputation.
