Gary Stead, the current head coach of the New Zealand men’s cricket team, has been granted a two-year extension, allowing him to continue in his role until June 2025. Stead, who was initially appointed in late 2018 for a two-year period, saw his contract extended until the upcoming ODI World Cup in India in 2023. Now, with this latest extension, he will remain at the helm until the conclusion of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle in 2025.

The decision to extend Stead’s contract was made after a thorough consultation process, during which he received unanimous support from players, support staff, coaches, and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association. It was clear that there was overwhelming positivity surrounding Stead’s leadership and his impressive results.

The extended period covered by Stead’s contract will include several major tournaments, including the T20 World Cup in 2024, the Champions Trophy in 2025, and, if the team qualifies, the WTC final in the same year. With these high-profile events on the horizon, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board expressed confidence in Stead’s ability to continue guiding the team to success.

The NZC considered the possibility of a split-coaching role but ultimately decided to support the status quo. Most of the senior BLACKCAPS players participate in all three formats, and the existing positive team culture played a significant role in the decision. Additionally, the concept of a fourth coach was introduced, whereby specialized coaches with expertise in specific overseas environments or formats would support the New Zealand touring teams. This approach has already been implemented on previous tours, with coaches such as Stephen Fleming, Shane Bond, Saqlain Mushtaq, Luke Wright, and Thilan Samaraweera joining the team.

David White, the CEO of NZC, expressed his satisfaction with the extensive discussions and consultation that preceded the decision. He emphasized his confidence in Stead’s abilities and highlighted the support and trust he enjoys from players and staff.

Tim Southee, the Test captain, echoed the sentiments of the NZC and emphasized the importance of managing people in addition to the technical aspects of coaching. He praised Stead for his success in leading the team to finals in all three formats, including the recent triumph in the World Test Championship. The challenging nature of international cricket, with players and support staff spending significant time away from their families, makes effective management of workloads and individuals crucial.

Stead’s extension as the head coach of the New Zealand men’s cricket team until June 2025 reflects the confidence and support he has from players, support staff, and the NZC board. With an exciting lineup of tournaments ahead, including multiple World Cups, New Zealand will look to continue their success under Stead’s guidance. As the team aims for further accomplishments on the international stage, Stead’s leadership and expertise will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in their journey.
