Gandhi urges U.S. audience to support India’s modernization

Indian opposition leader, Rahul Gandhi, has called for his fellow citizens in India and the United States to stand up for democracy and the Indian constitution. Speaking in New York, the politician, who has been on a tour of the US which has included speaking engagements at Stanford University and the National Press Club, criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharativa Janata party for failing to prioritise issues such as unemployment and education and accused them of dividing the country. Gandhi also warned that modern India could not exist without its constitution and democracy and called for a stronger partnership between the US and India to counter China’s influence. He is considered to be Modi’s main challenger in the 2024 election.
