The Gujarat State Football Association (GSFA) is organizing an 8-day state Futsal Club Championship starting Wednesday at the Sama indoor sports complex. The championship is the first of its kind in the state and will feature nine teams for the men’s category and four teams for the women’s category. The tournament will provide an opportunity for teams to compete for the All India Futsal Club Championship, according to Parimal Nathwani, President of GSFA.
Futsal is an indoor sport played on a smooth surface with touch lines, featuring a smaller ball than a regular soccer ball, which produces a lower rebound. It’s fast-paced and each team is made up of five players. Through this tournament, Gujarat hopes to create awareness for the sport and gauge the state’s strength in this alternative form of football.
Parimal Nathwani is a noted industrialist and politician in India. He has held various posts in the Gujarat government including the ministerial positions of Government chief whip, deputy chief minister and minister for Sports, Youth and Cultural Activities. He is the recipient of numerous awards for his philanthropic endeavors, and has been the president of the GSFA since 2018.
This tournament is an exciting opportunity for all teams involved, and with Nathwani’s leadership, any team that comes out victorious will have earned its title in a competitive game. Through this championship, Gujarat has already proven to be an advocate for Futsal and fans all around the state can expect the intensity and level of play to be at its highest level.
