Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson found himself at the center of a heated confrontation with Sheffield United star Max Lowe despite his team’s perfect start to the season. The incident occurred during Saturday’s match at Bramall Lane, where Palace aimed to secure a winning start to the 2023-24 campaign. And they did just that, as Odsonne Edouard scored the opener shortly after half-time.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for Hodgson, who found himself involved in a tense affair with Lowe. Television cameras captured the moment when the ball rolled towards Hodgson during the game. Lowe attempted to retrieve it, but in the process, he pushed the former England manager.
This triggered an angry reaction from Hodgson, who seemed to square up to Lowe. Fortunately, Palace striker Jordan Ayew intervened, acting as the peace-maker and getting between the two players.
After the game, Hodgson addressed the incident and reassured that there was no lasting issue. He stated, I don’t think he meant to catch me, chasing the ball to the side. We both smiled about it. My first reaction, of course, when I received the blow was to complain. But I think it was a pure accident, it was nothing.
While Hodgson offered his perspective on the clash, there were varying opinions on the matter. Sky pundit Clinton Morrison shared his thoughts, saying, Roy wants to fight someone! Nice man… Max Lowe’s gone to get the ball. He thinks it’s his throw. He’s just tried to move Roy out of the way. Roy’s grabbed him and said – don’t do that again! There’s a little bit of a melee. But it’s alright. It’s been sorted. Still 1-0. But it did make me laugh, because I’m thinking, you can’t argue with Roy Hodgson, can you Simon?
Meanwhile, former Premier League referee Mike Dean expressed his surprise at the showdown, remarking, To be fair, he’s done it with a bit of skill, Roy. He’s just lost it a bit. I’ve never seen him get that irate ever!
Looking ahead, Hodgson will undoubtedly be aiming to avoid any further issues as Palace seeks to extend their winning start to the new campaign. Their next match will be against Arsenal at Selhurst Park, while Sheffield United will be eager to secure their first top-flight win as they face Nottingham Forest next Friday.
As the season progresses, it remains to be seen if Hodgson’s fiery encounter with Lowe will have any lasting impact. However, for now, both teams can refocus on their upcoming fixtures and strive for success in the Premier League.
