Eppie Muranda: From Carer to Diagnostic Radiographer in the UK
Eppie Muranda, at the age of 48, never anticipated leaving her home village. Nevertheless, as a teenager, she made the surprising move to the UK. It was a challenging experience marked by homesickness and cultural shock. Yet, there was one thing that intrigued her – the role of a radiographer. In 1984, when her mother broke her leg, Eppie accompanied her to the hospital. Witnessing the radiographers positioning her mother and capturing images behind the screen fascinated her.
However, Eppie’s mother initially doubted her ability to pursue a career in radiography. At that time, there was a misconception that financial backing was necessary for such a profession. Undeterred, Eppie held onto her dream of becoming a radiographer.
After completing two years of study in data processing management, Eppie worked in hospitality, but her longing for job satisfaction persisted. Her path eventually led her to work as a healthcare assistant in nursing homes and hospitals, reigniting her passion for diagnostic radiography. Working in a healthcare environment and immersing herself in literature about radiography and physics fueled her determination.
Twenty-two years after her initial exposure to the field, Eppie embarked on her academic journey in Diagnostic Radiography, and in 2009, she graduated with honors from Salford University.
Eppie’s prior experience in patient safety, administering controlled drugs, communication skills, team leadership, and problem-solving undoubtedly paved the way for her successful transition into the role of a diagnostic radiographer. She furthered her training by dedicating another two years to Interventional Radiology (IR).
Now serving as the Clinical Lead, Eppie’s enthusiasm for her job remains as strong as it was when she first considered a career in radiography. She takes pride in knowing that she has enhanced the department and contributed to the Trust. Positive feedback from her managers and the chance to constantly improve and do more motivate her. Eppie appreciates the supportive structure of the workplace, regular meetings, and an open-door policy where she knows her managers have her back.
Providing care for patients brings Eppie constant satisfaction. She is passionate about ensuring they are treated with respect, dignity, and empathy – just as she would want her own loved ones to be treated. Her skills have evolved, and numerous opportunities have arisen within her expansive Trust, known for its collaboration and harmonization of health services. The organization actively promotes equality, diversity, and inclusivity, striving to improve the well-being of diverse communities across Manchester and its surroundings.
Eppie encourages others to pursue a career in diagnostic radiography. In fact, her own daughter is soon to graduate in therapeutic radiography. Eppie also runs a charity organization that raises awareness about careers in radiography and radiotherapy. Additionally, she organizes events during Black History Month where communities come together to network, socialize, and empower one another.
Eppie Muranda’s journey from being a carer to becoming a diagnostic radiographer showcases resilience, determination, and a commitment to serving patients with compassion. Her story inspires and encourages individuals from all walks of life to follow their dreams and overcome any obstacles they may face along the way.
