Freedom Fighters Call for Compensation from British Over Brutal Colonization

Freedom fighters in Kenya are demanding compensation from the British government for the atrocities committed during the country’s brutal colonization. The call for redress comes after King Charles’s recent visit to Kenya, during which he failed to issue an apology for the suffering endured under British rule.

Raila Odinga, the leader of the Azimio movement, expressed his disappointment that the King did not acknowledge the pain and suffering endured by Kenyans before gaining independence. He highlighted the fierce battle against the British and the brutal methods employed, resulting in numerous deaths and forced displacement.

During the launch of the Mau Mau Freedom Fighters Foundation in Nairobi, Raila emphasized the importance of recognizing the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and granting them the compensation they deserve. The foundation aims to establish a historical gallery where veterans can share their stories through artifacts and tales, ensuring the preservation of their experiences for future generations.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission Executive Director, Davis Malombe, echoed the sentiment, stating that an apology from the British government is necessary to acknowledge guilt and provide redress. He compared the visit of King Charles to that of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who expressed remorse for the killings committed by Germans during colonial rule in Tanzania.

The freedom fighters and their supporters argue that an apology is crucial to restore their dignity and recognize their contribution to Kenya’s independence. Lawyer Paul Muite emphasized that the Mau Mau fighters were not terrorists but individuals fighting for their freedom.

Despite the disappointment with King Charles’s visit, the freedom fighters are still waiting for an invitation from the British High Commission and a response to their petition. The Kenya Human Rights Commission remains committed to pursuing justice and reparations in accordance with UN guidelines on the right to remedy.

The Mau Mau Freedom Fighters Foundation will also support the veterans financially through stipends, erect statues at their burial sites, and seek funding for ongoing operations. Additionally, it will provide educational bursaries to deserving students and ensure the maintenance of the Mau Mau War Veterans Association.

The demands for compensation highlight the need for a bipartisan approach, as both the government and the official opposition should unite to address the grievances of the freedom fighters. Recognizing and respecting these heroes is essential for nurturing heroes of the future, according to lawyer Paul Muite.

In conclusion, the freedom fighters of Kenya are seeking compensation and an official apology from the British government for the sufferings endured during colonization. The establishment of the Mau Mau Freedom Fighters Foundation aims to preserve their stories and secure justice for their sacrifices. The pursuit of compensation is viewed as a step towards restoring the dignity and humanity of these freedom fighters who played a pivotal role in Kenya’s struggle for independence.
