Trumbull Career & Technical Center in Warren, Ohio, has taken a significant step towards supporting the vision health of its students. As part of a state mandate by the Ohio Department of Health, students in grades nine and 11 recently underwent routine eye exams. This initiative aims to identify students who may be struggling with their eyesight and ensure they receive the necessary vision services.
Students who encountered difficulties during the eye exams were referred to Vision to Learn’s mobile clinic and received an appointment with a licensed independent optometrist. Vision to Learn is a nonprofit organization that provides vision services to students across the United States, with a focus on supporting academic achievement.
Following the exams, students were given the opportunity to choose from over 100 frame options provided by Classic Optical in Youngstown, Ohio. The best part is that these frames come at no cost to the families, relieving them of the financial burden typically associated with obtaining eyeglasses.
Christine Johnstone, the program manager for Vision to Learn’s Youngstown branch, emphasized the importance of ensuring that students have access to eyeglasses. She stated, A lot of times, families might be able to go to an eye doctor and get that frame, but we know how expensive that can be, and they break them and then they’re stuck. We try to make sure that we keep those glasses on their faces.
This initiative is an excellent step forward in addressing the vision needs of Ohio students. By providing free eye exams and glasses, Trumbull Career & Technical Center, in collaboration with Vision to Learn, is supporting the academic success and well-being of its students. Access to proper vision care can greatly impact a student’s ability to learn and thrive in an educational setting.
The importance of such programs cannot be overstated, as approximately 25% of children in the United States struggle with vision problems. Identifying and addressing these issues at an early stage can have a significant impact on a student’s educational journey.
Vision to Learn’s commitment to supporting students across the country is commendable. By collaborating with schools and offering essential vision services, they play a vital role in leveling the playing field and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.
Overall, the implementation of free eye exams and glasses for Ohio students is a crucial step towards addressing the vision health needs of young individuals. Trumbull Career & Technical Center’s participation in this initiative, alongside Vision to Learn, showcases their dedication to the academic success and well-being of their students. With improved vision, these students will be better equipped to excel in their studies and pursue their dreams with confidence.
