Alana Hamilton and Lasheta McClellan, a duo from Ohio, have been indicted on multiple charges for their involvement in a fraudulent scheme linked to COVID-19 unemployment benefits. The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and the co-conspirator allegedly colluded to wrongfully release approximately $6 million in unemployment funds.

The Office of the Inspector General in Ohio revealed that the investigation into this fraudulent operation commenced in February 2022 after the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported suspicion of wrongdoing to the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Investigative Group. Alana Hamilton, previously employed by the ODJFS as an intermittent customer service representative, played a key role in the unlawful release of benefits.

Within her position, Hamilton reviewed claims related to the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, ensuring that the necessary identity verification and employment documents were filed accurately. However, it is alleged that she abused her access to unassigned claims and tampered with the verification and eligibility process, leading to the illicit release of unemployment assistance.

Further investigations carried out by the inspector general’s office uncovered evidence of collaboration between Hamilton and McClellan, emphasizing their joint efforts to defraud the state. The Office of the Inspector General’s press release stated that during an interview, Hamilton admitted to working with McClellan. Their scheme involved charging claimants a fee to help them fraudulently obtain PUA monies, with McClellan compensating Hamilton for releasing benefits to ineligible individuals.

The investigation revealed that the duo also operated independently, issuing fraudulent PUA claims worth millions of dollars. Together, they were responsible for releasing 40 claims totaling $1,171,561, while Hamilton alone released 104 claims amounting to $2,395,594.50, and McClellan issued 86 claims worth $2,339,512.

The case highlights the vulnerability of financial assistance programs during times of crisis, where individuals resort to fraudulent tactics to exploit the system. This fraudulent duo’s actions robbed deserving candidates of vital financial support amid the economic hardships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Authorities are determined to hold Hamilton and McClellan accountable for their alleged crimes, as both face charges including engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, theft, tampering with records, money laundering, and filing incomplete, false, or fraudulent tax returns. The legal proceedings will take place in Franklin County, Ohio.

The consequences of such fraudulent activities not only hinder the delivery of much-needed aid to those impacted by the pandemic but also erode public trust in government relief programs. As investigations continue, it is hoped that increased scrutiny and improved safeguards will prevent similar incidents in the future.

Efforts are ongoing to rectify the damages caused by this fraudulent operation in Ohio. The state’s authorities and relevant agencies are dedicated to ensuring that unemployment benefits reach those genuinely in need and that justice is served against those who seek to exploit the system for personal gain.

While cases like this expose vulnerabilities within assistance programs, they also highlight the importance of establishing robust measures to detect and prevent fraudulent activities. As the pandemic continues to test nations worldwide, safeguarding public funds and support systems remains a critical task for governments and law enforcement agencies.
