A footballer has departed France’s U-19 national team camp following the enforcement of new rules by the French Football Federation (FFF) that prohibit Muslim players from fasting during Ramadan while on international duty. The player in question is Mahamadou Diawara, who was called up by coach Bernard Diomede for the Euro U19 Elite Tour. The FFF’s president, Philippe Diallo, defended the decision, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a neutral environment within the national team set-up. This policy extends across all age groups, from under-16s to the senior squad, with some players expressing discontent over the lack of religious accommodation. The rules also extend to domestic games in France, where fasting breaks during Ramadan are not permitted. In contrast, other major leagues like the English Premier League and Bundesliga have allowed players to observe fasting during matches. Despite Diawara’s departure, the FFF has not issued new directives regarding this matter for the current season.
