The French-led campaign, in collaboration with the UK, to overthrow former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 has been described as a disastrous error by France’s former spy chief in Libya, according to a report by The Times. Jean-Francois Lhuillier, the former Tripoli station chief of the Directorate General for External Security (DGSE), has revealed the story of the secret operations to bring down Gaddafi in his book titled The Tripoli Man: Memoirs of a Secret Agent. His revelations have caused controversy and embarrassment for the DGSE, as well as sparking debate about the political and moral implications of the operation.

Lhuillier, who worked for the Secret Service for 27 years before retiring in 2014, believes that the decision by then President Nicolas Sarkozy to support the rebels against Gaddafi was incomprehensible. He argues that although the military operation was executed brilliantly, it was not thought through politically and resulted in disastrous consequences. Lhuillier criticizes the lack of diplomacy, claiming that Gaddafi had extended his hand to the West, but instead of accepting it, they figuratively cut off his head. He finds this action immoral and questions the reasoning behind it.

The fallout from Lhuillier’s revelations raises important questions about the role of intelligence agencies, diplomatic decision-making, and the consequences of military interventions in foreign countries. The campaign to oust Gaddafi was carried out under the guise of supporting democratic aspirations and protecting civilians during the Arab Spring uprisings. However, it ultimately became a prolonged conflict, leading to Gaddafi’s overthrow, the destabilization of Libya, and a power vacuum that allowed extremist groups to flourish.

Critics argue that Western involvement in Libya opened the door for further turmoil, with the country descending into a state of chaos and becoming a breeding ground for terrorist organizations such as ISIS. Meanwhile, others contend that the fall of Gaddafi was a necessary step towards democratization and liberation for the Libyan people. The complexities of the situation and the hindsight of its aftermath pose difficult questions regarding the ethics and effectiveness of military interventions.

The revelations by Lhuillier shed light on the inner workings of the intelligence community and the decision-making processes that shape international affairs. The criticism he has faced from the Secret Service serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and accountability in such operations. It also highlights the challenges faced by intelligence agencies in navigating the delicate balance between national security interests, geopolitical considerations, and moral imperatives.

As the world reflects on the consequences of their actions in Libya, it is crucial to learn from past mistakes and avoid repeating them in future conflicts. The case of Gaddafi’s ousting serves as a reminder of the complexities and risks associated with foreign interventions. It is a call for governments and agencies to carefully consider the long-term implications of their actions, ensuring that political and military decisions are accompanied by well-thought-out diplomatic strategies to prevent further destabilization and protect the interests of all involved parties.

In the face of such revelations, it is essential for governments and societies to engage in open and honest discussions that foster an understanding of the complexities and consequences of foreign interventions. By critically analyzing past actions and exploring alternative approaches, we can strive to develop more effective and morally sound strategies for addressing global challenges. Only through such reflection and growth can we hope to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past and build a more stable and just world.
