Four teenagers have been charged with the murder of a Chicago police officer who was returning home from work. Joseph Brooks and Trevell Breeland, both 19, Jakwon Buchanan, 18, and a 16-year-old boy have been charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery in the killing of 24-year-old Officer Aréanah Preston. The Chicago Police Department stated that Preston was fatally shot during a robbery spree in the early hours of May 6. The four teenagers have also been charged with armed robbery, burglary, motor vehicle theft, and other offenses related to incidents that took place on May 5 and 6. They appeared before Judge David Kelly, who ordered them to be held without bail due to the mountain of evidence provided by the prosecutors. Preston’s mother expressed her heartbreak and anger following the bond hearing. The Mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, commended the police for swiftly apprehending the suspects involved in the heinous murder. Prosecutors revealed that Preston, who had been serving the department for just three years, was off duty and on her way home when the suspects approached her outside her house. Surveillance video showed three individuals exiting a sedan and assaulting Officer Preston, who was still in uniform. After multiple shots were fired, the attackers fled, with one of them returning to grab Preston’s firearm, according to court documents. Interim Police Superintendent Eric Carter described Preston’s death as a tragedy for the city, while the commander of the 5th District, Tyrone Pendarvis, spoke highly of the officer, describing her as a rising star who will be deeply missed. Officer Preston’s death is considered a line-of-duty death, entitling her family to financial assistance from the state. The tragic incident has sparked grief and outrage among the Chicago community, shining a spotlight on the dangers faced by law enforcement officers.
