Four individuals have been booked for cheating devotees at the Mahakal Darshan in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The Mahakal police have registered a case against them under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for allegedly committing fraud worth thousands of rupees in the guise of bhasm-aarti and jalabhishek at the Mahakaleshwar temple.
According to SI Anil Thakur, the incident occurred when Nand Kishore Sharma from Durg, Chhattisgarh, visited the Mahakaleshwar temple on June 28. He was accompanied by five family members, namely Moushumi, Vikram, Nisha, and Sonu. During their visit, they were allegedly cheated by four individuals: Ghanshyam Sharma, Dheeraj Sharma, Bhavesh Joshi, and Sonu Parikh.
Reports suggest that Ghanshyam Sharma charged them over Rs 1,500 per person instead of the actual fee of Rs 750 for entry into the sanctum sanctorum. Furthermore, he allegedly demanded an additional Rs 200 for the bhasm-aarti. As a result, a case was filed against the four accused based on the complaint made by 55-year-old Premnarayan from the Mahakaleshwar temple office.
Incidents like these are deeply concerning as they exploit the faith and trust of devotees who visit religious sites with the hope of finding solace and spiritual fulfillment.
