According to officials in Maharashtra, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority, four app-based taxi aggregators operating in the region have failed to comply with the Centre’s Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2020. These firms include ride-hailing giants Uber and Ola. In February 2023, the Supreme Court ruled that all app-based taxi aggregators must apply for a licence by March 6 in order to continue operations in Maharashtra. Following this ruling, Uber India System Limited and ANI Technologies Limited (which runs the Ola service) applied for licenses at the Tardeo RTO in south Mumbai but were found to be non-compliant with guidelines. Cab-age Infra Tech Private Limited and Media Miles Private Limited also failed to meet the necessary criteria. A transport secretary for Maharashtra directed that the government’s guidance be sought on the matter.
