Super Bowl champion and writer/producer for HBO’s Ballers Rashard Mendenhall has put up his Los Angeles compound for $4.236 million. Fans of the running back may find that number familiar — the listing price is a wink to Mendenhall’s 4,236 NFL career rushing yards. Mendenhall purchased the estate in Northridge’s Sherwood Forest neighborhood in 2017, two years after the premiere of Ballers. At that time, the property’s only connection to Hollywood was from another famous previous owner, the late comedian and actor Richard Pryor, who owned the home for nearly 15 years. Surrounded by a citrus grove — a remnant of the property’s history as a citrus plantation — a long hidden driveway halts at the gates of the walled estate. Each time the gate opens, the first impression never fails to leave an impact, says Neil McDermott, vice president of Hilton & Hyland, who holds the listing. This property is a refuge from the chaos and stress of everyday life in the big city. Manicured landscaping spreads across 2.2 acres, while some 9,000 square feet of living space is divided among the property’s six structures. The majority of this square footage lies within the hacienda-style main house. Spanish influence reaches every corner of the four-bedroom residence, from the terracotta tile and wood floors to rustic beamed cathedral ceilings. A line of French doors extends across the living area and dining room, leading out to a covered terrace. The home’s second family room is equipped with a sunken wet bar, just one of the many entertainment spaces including game and billiards rooms. Other highlights include a library, sauna and wine closet. Upstairs, the primary suite features balcony access, with views overlooking the elaborate grounds. Visitors will be well-accommodated thanks to a guesthouse with a kitchen as well as a pool house also with a kitchen. Another building currently utilized as a professional dance studio/gym offers additional flexibility. Completing the collection is a separate office, children’s playhouse and kennel. A three-car garage provides covered parking with additional event parking for 25 cars also available. Fitting for an athlete, the grounds house a variety of recreational amenities, such as a swimming pool, tennis court, and putting greens. While no horses have been on the property for quite some time, the estate is zoned for equestrian use. Mendenhall, who retired from the NFL in 2014 at the age of 26, is best known for his time as a Pittsburgh Steeler, winning Super Bowl XLIII with the team in 2009. After completing his career with the Arizona Cardinals, Mendenhall went on to serve as a writer and producer for Ballers for the entirety of the show’s five-season run.
