A former prisoner from Bournemouth is embarking on a charity adventure, cycling from Portsmouth to Paris on a Beryl bike. David Haze, who turned his life around through sport, will cover a distance of 155 miles (249km) to raise funds for Dorset Mind, a mental health support charity. Starting his journey on Monday morning, Mr. Haze will take a ferry to Caen, France, where he will ride overnight. The 38-year-old ex-prisoner holds eight world records in paddleboarding and has been mentoring young individuals, encouraging them to steer away from a life of crime.

Mr. Haze believes in the transformative power of adventure and being outdoors. He stated, The power of adventure and the power of being outdoors can really change people’s mindsets and their positivity, their outlook towards life. After setting the world record for the fastest time spent solo paddleboarding across the River Thames in 2021, he decided to tackle a new challenge on solid ground, choosing the unconventional Beryl bike.

Acknowledging that Beryl bikes are typically heavier than standard bikes, Mr. Haze aims to make the journey even more interesting. He stated, These bikes aren’t designed to travel to France – they’re usually used to plodding around your local towns and cities.

David Haze’s journey serves as a testament to personal transformation and the positive impact of physical activity on mental health. Since his release from HMP Guys Marsh in Dorset in April 2020, he has taken on various sporting challenges, exemplifying the potential for change and growth.

The former city trader combines his passion for adventure and charity to contribute to Dorset Mind, recognizing the profound importance of mental health support. By pushing his physical boundaries and embarking on this challenging ride, Mr. Haze hopes to inspire others and raise awareness for a cause close to his heart.

As he sets off on his cycling adventure, David Haze seeks to demonstrate that overcoming personal obstacles is possible, regardless of past mistakes. Through his determination, resilience, and dedication to making a positive impact, he serves as an inspiration to others who may be facing their own challenges.

With his unwavering commitment to personal growth and community betterment, David Haze’s journey to Paris on a Beryl bike resonates with audiences worldwide. His story represents the power of second chances, perseverance, and the transformative potential of embracing new adventures.
